Who is this video guide for?

This couples guide is for new photographers who are looking to spark their creativity and get inspired. It’s for those who are learning their way around their camera and are looking to get a better understanding of their settings. This is perfect for photographers who would benefit from seeing another photographer’s settings throughout an entire session and for anyone wanting to see firsthand how I position my clients with the sun as the lighting changes.

Let’s touch on all these things above in a little more detail:

  • Learn how to prompt and pose your clients to create beautiful images with natural smiles. See first-hand what I’m having my clients do to feel comfortable, let their personalities come through, and create the effortless looking photos that you see on my Instagram.

  • Walk away from this video with a new perspective of shooting. You’ll gain new ideas and inspiration for your own couples sessions. Small details make a huge difference in the outcome of photos, and I’ll identify little details throughout the shoot to pay attention to, which will make all of the difference in your final gallery.

  • Grasp the settings that are going to work well with certain lighting situations as you see examples of my settings throughout the entire shoot. There is no one size fits all setting combination for a couples session, so knowing when to adjust ISO, aperture (f-stop), and shutter speed is essential to successfully creating sharp, in focus, and correctly exposed photos.

  • Understand how you can better position your couples with the sun. It’s important to use the sun to your advantage and not to let it work against you. You’ll see me shooting with harsh backlit lighting, glowy golden hour lighting, and soft blue hour lighting. Knowing how to position your clients during each of these lighting situations is key to expose them to look their best and prevent them from being blown out. I talk about positioning with the sun a couple of times during the shoot, but if this is something you’re hoping to focus on, you’ll want to pay attention to where the shadows are falling to grasp how I’m angling the couple with the sun.

I just want to mention that what you see in this video guide is definitely not the only way to have a successful couples shoot - there are so many different styles of shooting. However, I receive many questions on prompting, settings, and lighting, and I wanted to compile and share what works well for me all in one place for those wanting to learn and see things from another photographer’s point of view. Cheers to you for wanting to grow and better yourself for your photography business and your couples!

There is no better investment than investing in yourself.

FAQ

  • A: Most mailboxes will send the download to your promotions inbox rather than your primary inbox! It should show up right away.

  • A: If you’re a more seasoned photographer and you already feel super confident in prompting, posing and creating a laid back atmosphere for your couple to be comfortable, you might not need this guide! However, if you are still wanting to see a shoot from a different perspective and get some inspiration, see what my camera settings are from start to finish & how I position clients with the changing sun at a golden hour session, then this is for you!

  • A: Google Chrome has a security feature that will block certain types of files from being downloaded. (I promise it’s not dangerous!) I recommend downloading through Safari to avoid this pop up. If you don’t have access to Safari and are using Chrome, click the three dots at the top right of your screen, select downloads, click ‘ keep dangerous file’ , ‘keep anyway.’
